essay — what this is an instance of

A recapitulation, not an invention

Every layer of this returns a technique that already existed and was abandoned. What has changed is the reason for the return.

Extreme close-up of the surface of a shellac record, its grooves catching a single warm light.
Grooves cut in shellac. Every layer of this returns a technique that already existed.

Asking where a name comes from follows a word to its source and stops when it arrives. A harder question is what kind of thing this is, which earlier things it belongs with, and what had to be true of a particular moment for it to appear at all.

The answer is unflattering in a specific way, and the unflattering version is the correct one.

Zariia invents nothing. The forms underneath it were not suppressed and did not fail. Something plainly better arrived and nobody mourned them. They are worth returning to for what they did to the people using them, not for what they could carry.

The text this runs on

One text on this page is not a resemblance. It was written by the same hand thirteen years before the label, and it states the law the object obeys.

8 October 2013 — Museum of Vestigial Desire

Audience opens by not knowing who is there. “Who is the other? Who listens when we speak? Is it fair to even expect someone to do so?”

Intensity and access are inversely related, the more the access the less the intensity and the less the access the more the intensity.

A record with a sealed channel runs both of those settings at once, on one object. The open track takes the high-access setting and pays for it. The sealed channel takes the low one and is paid in it. Neither cancels the other and nothing has to be resolved between them. The essay is not against reach; “narrowcasting or broadcasting are available choices and are employed as required.” What it is against is reach arriving by default, unchosen.

It then refuses the measurement that would tell anyone whether any of this worked. “We do not keep server logs, so there is no way of knowing how many people visit the website. If you do not know a number it can be anything. It can be zero and it can be infinite.” This label inherits that. Nobody here knows who unlocks a sealed channel, or how many people have heard a record whole, and there is no plan to find out.

Two more sentences from it reach past the format. “There is no scope to judge the quality of an experience on the basis of dry third-party reportage” — you had to be there, which is why the work is convened rather than reported. And “if you cannot connect with something it means that it wasn't meant for you,” which makes a record that reaches four people an ordinary outcome instead of a small one.

The caution at the foot of this page applies here more sharply than anywhere else on it, and for the same reason it applies to Masking below.

Sound that carried more than it seemed to

from about 1979 — Hilversum

The Dutch broadcaster NOS began transmitting computer programs over the radio on a programme called Hobbyscoop. Software was stored on audio cassette anyway, so the audio could simply be broadcast, and listeners across the country held blank tapes to their radios and recorded it. The format that made this work across incompatible machines was BASICODE, which let one broadcast serve a ZX Spectrum, a Commodore 64, a BBC Micro and an Apple II.

1983–1986 — Belgrade

Radio Belgrade's Ventilator 202 did the same, roughly a hundred and fifty broadcasts, largely for the Galaksija.

What arrived over the air sounded like noise and was a program. The same broadcast reached everyone in earshot, and only those who knew what it was — and had the tape running — took anything from it. A record with a sealed channel is that arrangement moved indoors: the same object for everyone, and a second thing inside it for whoever was told.

The work that requires convening

The third lineage is not engineering at all.

1951 — New York, 10 May

Cage's Imaginary Landscape No. 4. Twelve radios, twenty-four performers and a conductor, two players to each set, one turning the dial and the other handling volume and tone. About four minutes. The first of his pieces built entirely on chance operations, and its content is whatever happens to be on the air in that city at that hour. The work cannot be stored. It can only be convened.

1969

I Am Sitting in a Room. Lucier records a spoken passage, plays it back into the room, records that, and repeats until the room's resonant modes dominate and the speech has eroded into the room's own signature. The room stops being the container and becomes the content.

1997

Zaireeka, four discs on four machines. Behind it the Parking Lot Experiments, dozens of car stereos in a garage.

The gathering is the medium, and the work does not exist between gatherings.

Keyed circulation

The fourth lineage is the one this most obviously belongs to, and it is worth being precise about where it departs.

Soviet Union

Magnitizdat — tape-recorded publishing. Recordings copied privately and passed along, resilient largely because owning a tape recorder was not illegal and no state can watch every kitchen. Roentgenizdat, the "bone music" discs, went further and cut grooves into discarded X-ray film when proper stock was unavailable.

Iran, 1978–79

Cassettes of sermons moving through mosques, universities and families, crossing between city and countryside faster than a censor could follow.

In all of these the gate sits at the object. You had to be in the network to get the tape, and once you held it you heard everything on it.

Zariia moves the gate inward, and this is the departure that matters. The object travels freely and completely; the key is what passes hand to hand. Possession becomes universal and comprehension becomes the thing that is held. The closer ancestors for that move are the double-voiced traditions — Polari, the exoteric surface over an esoteric core — where nothing is hidden and what is gated is the reading.

The same move, once before

One antecedent on this page is not borrowed. It was made by the same hand, and it made the departure just described fourteen years early.

2012 — Berlin and Vienna

Masking, a security product concept: ordinary objects with USB security keys embedded in them, which opened layers of private conversation inside public websites. Hardware-based authentication for privacy-preserving communication. Exhibited at Transmediale in Berlin and at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna.

Masking had the whole arrangement already. The page was public and stayed public. The second layer opened only for whoever was holding the object, and the object had to be put into somebody's hand. Nothing was concealed and what was gated was the reading — the same inward move, in a different medium, before there was any reason to call it one.

Three things separate it from this. Its key was hardware, so it could be lost, lent or taken as a physical thing; a per-drop key is a string that copies perfectly and cannot be called back. What it opened was conversation between people rather than a work that somebody made and stands behind. And it was a concept exhibited rather than a catalogue released — which is the difference between showing that a form is possible and having to live inside it, with musicians, money, credit and rights attached to it.

The finding that should not be softened

Every technique above was abandoned, and none of them was abandoned because of repression.

BASICODE ended because networks arrived. Cassettes ended because copying got easier everywhere. Each was superseded by something plainly better, and nobody mourned.

So none of this is being revived because it works better. It is being revived because of what it does to the people using it.

A record you cannot fully hear until somebody hands you the key is not a technical improvement on a record you can. It is a different social object, and the difference is the point.

The tension this leaves

Two histories are available and they do not sit together.

Both are defensible, and they produce different labels. The choice has not been made, and pretending it had would be the more serious error.

A caution about the method

Lineages found afterwards flatter the thing that finds them.

Zariia did not descend from Cage, or from Hobbyscoop, or from a cassette passed between two people in Tehran in 1978. It arrived at similar constraints and the family resemblance appeared later. Some of these are close enough to be instructive, particularly BASICODE, which is nearly the same system. None of them is a reason, and none is evidence that the design is right.

Two things on this page complicate that and do not settle it. Masking and Audience are real antecedents rather than resemblances noticed afterwards, which makes them the strongest items here. It also makes them the weakest evidence. A self-lineage is the most flattering kind there is, because the practice gets to be its own precedent and nobody else has to agree. The safe reading is that the same person arrived at the same constraint three times across fourteen years. That says something about the person and not much about whether this is right.

Facts verified 26 July 2026: the Cage forces, premiere date and chance basis; the Lucier process; the NOS/Hobbyscoop and BASICODE broadcasts from around 1979 and Ventilator 202's roughly 150 broadcasts, 1983–1986; magnitizdat and roentgenizdat; the Iranian cassette circulation of 1978–79. Masking's year, description and venues are its own catalogue entry, at prayasabhinav.net/design.
